ASW Report #2 – Link Building Realities

This was a pretty cool session because it’s one of the first times I’ve ever heard an SEO expert preach the merits of Blackhat link building on stage at a mainstream event like this.

The speakers name was Robert Adler ( and the overall theme of his talk was that if you want your site to rank well in Google for even moderately competitive keywords you need to employ an aggressive link building campaign using a combination of link building tactics, many of which will be Blackhat.

He did take some flack from one audience member when he talked about the power of forum and blog commenting and software like XRumer to automate the process (aka spam) but I thought he handled it well by stating he was not going to argue the ethics of what works… he was just sharing what really does work.

The fact is, in the world of affiliate marketing the guys I know who are making a killing using organic SEO are the ones who spend the majority of time employing Blackhat link building tactics including:

  • Automated forum posting
  • Automated blog commenting
  • Automated link wheel creation
  • Automated article submission
  • Automated directory submission
  • Buying links

Did you see a common denominator in that list? Yeah… “Automated”.

Other than buying links, most of the other tasks are automated using software like:

I have used all of these at one time or another and although they are very powerful they are not user friendly.

And then they spend the rest of their time buying links using forums like:

So like Robert said, I am not going to argue the ethics of these strategies. But you can’t deny the fact that they really work… at least today.

That said, if you do use them incorrectly you can get your website booted from Google pretty quickly so a couple of tips to protect yourself…

Tip #1: Do not use Blackhat directly on your money site. The only tactics you should ever use on your money site are Whitehat SEO and making sure your on-site SEO is done properly.

Tip #2: Build a layer of micro sites that you build blackhat links to and then link to your money site from the micro site. The link juice will pass to the money site but if you get a Google penalty from your Blackhat link building that penalty will be on the micro site which you can simply remove and avoid passing a penalty to your money site.

If that made no sense, here is a little diagram I drew to explain it better…

And one more little nugget that I picked up… has an RSS feed option so that you can automatically submit all of your new posts to their article directory right when it is published giving you an instant backlink from a high Pagerank site. I have not set it up yet but if someone has any info on how to do this feel free to post in the comments below.

Stay tuned… more to come!

  1. Why users still make use of to read news papers when in this technological globe everything is
    accessible on web?

  2. Thanks for the tip on the EZA feed, didn’t know about that.

Automation isn’t necessarily blackhat in my book. When I think of blackhat tactics, I think of google bowling, clickjacking, etc. What’s blackhat/grayhat is really subjective I suppose.

Thanks for the liveblogs from ASW. I’ll definitely be following cause I can’t make it this year.
